Finding Out What the Color of Your Diamond is
A chemically flawless and structurally pure diamond is still perfectly clear with no visible color, or a tint. But in actuality very few gem-sized pure diamonds are perfectly flawless. The color of a diamond can be affected by structural defects and/or chemical impurities in the crystalline lattice structure. When light strikes a diamond and enters the lattice, the energy spectrum is correctly captured for the diamond's refractive index. This causes the diamond to reflect certain colors, which is what we see as the color of the diamond.
Most diamond shapes have common color ranges. For instance, an emerald cut stone has the color of green, purple or pink. This is because the carbon crystalline structure of the emerald cut stone is shaped like an "M-shaped" with the center tapering to a point at one end, while the other ends are more shaped like an "S" with a narrow wedge. The sides of these gemstones are then lighter than the center, giving emerald cut diamonds their dark green color. Amethyst cut diamonds, on the other hand, are known as "colored" or "sultry" diamonds because they have very little in the way of inclusions and are commonly pink in color. They are primarily mined in Brazil, South Africa, Australia, India and Namibia. One interesting thing about amethyst diamonds is that even though there are very few colorless ones found in nature, many dealers try to sell them in colorless form to consumers. This is because amethyst tends to occur in clusters rather than singly, and thus it can be easier to turn a profit selling them in this manner. The "K-Z" grading system first became popular in the 1970s. This way of grading is used to determine the value of a diamond. By assigning an alphabetical letter to a diamond's color, it is possible to discern what its grade would actually be. The letters of the alphabet are A, B, C, D, E, and F. An "A" is the lowest grade, while a "B" is the highest. "C" is used for colorless diamonds, while "D" is used for those with near-colorless inclusions. While they're used almost interchangeably, they actually refer to two different diamond color categories. White diamonds are generally considered the ideal engagement ring setting. In comparison to its counterpart, rose gold, which is closer to yellow, rose gold has a warmer, more elegant and bright look. When couples looking for an engagement ring that will last and be with their loved one for a long time, white is the way to go. Diamonds with colors closer to yellow are valued lower than those with deeper, richer shades of yellow. As a general rule, anything that is yellow in color, but not red, are in the higher diamond color category. Anything that is red in color, such as orange, red calla lilies or tiger snake skin, belongs in the lower class. Cashes of yellow gold are usually smaller than the average cut and can add a nice sparkle to any ring. With all of these guidelines from the mounting in mind, couples looking for the perfect engagement ring should do a bit of research to ensure they make the right choice when purchasing the ring. |
